The Basics of CMMC: What It Is... Why It Matters... & How it Effects Manufacturers in the DIB Supply Chain

  • Ogden Weber Technical College 200 N Washington Blvd Ogden, Utah U.S. (map)

This 25- to 30-minute presentation is designed as an accessible, high-level introduction to the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) tailored specifically for small and medium-sized manufacturers operating within the Defense Industrial Base (DIB).

We'll begin by covering the foundational questions—what CMMC is, why it was created, and how it has evolved since its inception. We’ll briefly walk through the timeline of CMMC’s development, to the rollout of current compliance expectations.

Next, we’ll shift focus to how CMMC applies directly to manufacturers, highlighting the real-world impact on daily operations, bidding eligibility, and long-term growth opportunities within the DoD supply chain. We'll acknowledge the common hurdles smaller manufacturers face, such as limited internal IT resources, evolving contract requirements, and interpreting federal compliance language.

Rather than diving into technical jargon, we’ll offer a practical, plain-English explanation of what becoming CMMC-compliant actually looks like—from implementing appropriate technologies and security practices to developing internal processes, policies, and staff training programs.

The presentation will close with an open Q&A and discussion session, encouraging participants to ask questions about their specific concerns and challenges. The goal is to leave attendees with a clear understanding of the importance of CMMC, a realistic view of what compliance entails, and a sense of where to begin their journey.
